Based on an empirical field study by the European 4.0 Transformation Center and EPLAN, a 38-page research paper was published. The study was conducted at German mechanical engineering companies for series engineering and engineer to order, consulting engineers / hardware planners as well as device manufacturers.

The paper encompasses a reference model as well as its validation with the help of the participating companies. We distinguish between five efficiency levels. For the transition to a superior efficiency level, activities are presented and resulting potential savings are highlighted.

The methodology offers an empirically supported view on current engineering workflows and can be considered a valuable driver towards the realization of engineering 4.0.
